We all want to go to Jannah right? Of course we do!

As-salam wa-alaikum MATW fam!

We all want to go to Jannah right? Of course we do!

And for us to be able to do that, we have to get one thing right before all others – this is always the first step in getting any action right that we want Allah SWT to reward us for. We may have heard about it a bunch of times, but we can never underestimate the importance of this one.

I am, of course, talking about intention!

It is narrated on the authority of Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah PBUH say:

“Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated.”

This hadith was said by the Prophet, PBUH, at the time when a man emigrated from Makkah to Madinah during the Hijrah for the sake of marrying someone and not for the sake of Islam. It is considered to be one of the greatest hadiths in Islam.

Al-Imam al-Shafie said, “This Hadith is one third of the knowledge of Islam; related to about 70 topics of Fiqh”.

So imagine how important this concept is if the great Imam Shafie said that it’s one third of all Islamic knowledge. That means if we get this one right, we are doing pretty well in sha Allah.

When it comes to charity specifically, we need to open up our hearts, as if you were opening a box, and look inside and see “why am I doing this?”.

We always need to check and correct our intention at 3 different times:

  • Before the act
  • During the act
  • After the act

One of the most common tricks of Iblis is to try to get you to stop doing the good deeds you set out to do by telling you “Don’t do it, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons” – in this way he tricks millions of Muslims into doing less good than they really want to do. Don’t let him rip you off!

The way to beat him at his own game is to take that whisper of “you’re doing it for the wrong reason” and mentally reply with “you’re right, I will fix my intention, and I will still go ahead and do the good deed I was planning!”. Imagine the frustration of Iblis, he tried to stop your good deed, but instead all he managed to do was correct your intention for you! If he wasn’t Iblis, I would almost feel sorry for him.

So check your intentions, and push forward with your good deeds rather than not doing them.

In sha Allah we all reach Jannah together! Start here by putting forward a good deed.

Much love to you all,

Br Ahmed Bassal.
